The claim
Lord Kelvin, 1867: Proposed atoms were knotted vortices in the luminiferous aether — completely wrong physics, abandoned within decades.

Kelvin's theory didn't originate knot theory — Gauss and Listing got there first — but it accelerated and systematized it, motivating Tait's exhaustive tabulation of knots once the physics collapsed.
